Cross Country League

Each year we take part in the Thames Valley Cross Country League which is a team competion over a series of 8 races.

What better way is there to start a crisp Sunday Winter morning than running through beautiful countryside in a team event? Especially when your entry is paid by the club and you get tea, cake and sandwiches afterwards. If you like the sound of all of the above then these races are for you.

Scoring

  • Each person crossing the line gets a score equal to their position in the overall race.
  • Men and women score seperately - so the first man gets 1 point, the first woman 1 point and so on.
  • A minimum scoring team comprises of their first 7 men (5 seniors plus 2 vets) and the first 3 women (2 seniors plus 1 vet).
  • For your score to count in the scoring team you need to be wearing club colours.
  • Some complex penalty system kicks in if a minimum scoring team isn't available for a team. Not sure what that is. If anyone knows can they email me.
  • The team with the best (i.e. lowest) total score wins and gets a number of points equal to the number of teams completing (normally 8).
  • The team with the next best score gets 1 point less and so on with the last team getting 1 point.
  • Points for the teams are tracked over the 8 race series.

Events

Datchet Dashers

Datchet is the first event, held on Remberance Sunday, there is a minutes silence before the race, please pay attention. The race takes place across the river at Eton on the Brocas, parking (pay and display) on the Eton side fills quickly.

The course is flat, and one of the longer runs. One lap of the field, start fast to get ahead before you hit the narrowing at the footpath. Do not wear spikes as there is a mile on tarmac path. If is has been raining then the fields are suitable muddy and taxing.

Sandhurst Joggers

At Hawley Lake just off junction 4A of the M3, go past the lake up a hill - a detailed set of directions can be found here. This can be very muddy, you might want wellies. The terrain is like the paths in The Lookout, - suitable for spikes, a few hills for those of you who like them. Advice is to keep to the right at the start, as there is a big puddle after 100 yards.

Reading Roadrunners

Takes place at Bearwood College, it's a 2 & a bit lap course through woodland, fields and track with a few gentle climbs. The terrain is mainly fast, but some of the stretches of exposed field tend to get waterlogged following excessive rain. A 200-metre section of track, and a short stretch of gravel may make it unsuitable for spikes. There is onsite car parking, but to help avoid too much congestion, please bring as few cars as possible.

Tadley Runners

The other side of Reading so a longer trip than some of the others. 15 minute walk from the school to start. The course is demanding with ditches and fields, and unless it has been moved a fallen tree. Showers available at the end (posh!!).

M4 to Junction 12, A4, then A340 through Adlermaston, take at right as you get to tadley, at brimpton common sharp left, parking in the school. There is plenty of parking space on the playground to the rear of the school. Please don’t park in the surrounding residential roads, the Leisure Centre car park, the lay-by in front of the school or at the start/finish area.

Handy Cross Runners

The toughest course, all hills. 15 minute walk to the start so allow time to get there. Good for spectators as runners cross the paths a couple of times.

Take the A4010 out of High Wycombe, right at Bradeham at the pub. At top of the hill turn left 1/2M parking in RAF car park (someone will collect car registration numbers).

Finch Coasters

There is parking at the start, although it is recommended that cars sharing is used and that most cars are parked at "The Finchampstead Sports Club", where there will be Showers, Tea, Buns and BEER available. (you have to buy your own beer!!).

Bracknell Forest Runners

Our own event and a change for this year - the event will not be held at The Lookout this year but instead at the Lightwater Country Park.

Metros

Held this year at Mad Bess Woods (!) - directions and information can be found here.
